Frequently Asked Questions

Mould (mold)

•Where does mould (mold) come from?

Mould (mold) in a home is directly related to water entering the home and the inappropriate actions of the home owner to remediate the water damage. The inaction of the home owner can result in mould (mold) damage to the structure and contents of a home.

•What should a home owner do to prevent mould (mold) from coming into his/her home?

The home owner’s first mistake in a water damage loss is to think that it is only clean water and it should dry on its own. This is false! Clean water will turn to mould (mold) faster then a sewer backup in a home. This is because in a sewer backup it has parasites, bacteria, viruses, and mould (mold). Mould (mold) does not compete well with other species. Mould (mold) will only take place after these species pass on, for example parasites and viruses. Then the bacteria arises within the home as decomposition will happen to these species and when the bacteria rises the mould (mold) will thrive as this is part of their food chain. In a clean water break mould (mold) does not have to compete with these species and can form within 72 hours.

•Is mould (mold) dangerous to my family’s health?

Mould (mold) is a living organism which lives outside as well as inside of a structure. Your bodies immune system has the ability to defend against a certain amount of mould (mold)s through its immune system. For example if a body could handle 50 mould (mold)s in a home that has over 1000 then the immune system can be broken down as it is being over taxed. Not all mould (mold)s can kill you but all mould (mold)s in great numbers in a closed structure can give you flue like or cold like symptoms. This is more likely found in children between the ages of 1 and 6 when the immune system is developing or in seniors 65 and older. But a healthy human or animal do not have a deprived immune system may not have any affect. For example, HIV or Cancer may be affected by mould (mold)s.

•How do I know that I have mould (mold)?

Not all mould (mold) is visible to the naked eye in-fact 400 mould (mold) spores can live on a spec of dust. If your humidity is above 60%, you will find that mould (mold) will start to germinate and grow. You will be able to smell the mould  (mold). Mould (mold) can start to grow in about 24 hrs when the conditions are right. If you are in doubt you need to have your home tested for mould (mold).

•How does mould (mold) spread?

Mould (mold) can lay dormant in a home forever waiting for the right environment to grow. In fact mould (mold) spores are hydro phobic witch means they do not like water. The spore will not grow unless it is disturbed or the

environment becomes favourable for its growth.

If their was a sudden influx of water or the humidity were to greatly increase then the spore being hydro phobic would shoot from the mould (mold) and would become a water loving mould (mold) spore traveling though the air by the air currents. This often happens when someone opens doors or windows. It is as easy as walking by them.

As long as there is a moisture sources and a food source you can have mould (mold) growth.

•Does it really need to be cleaned professionally?

Yes, it is recommended that it be cleaned under mechanically controlled conditions. It is very important to use the proper cleaners since not all cleaners will work on mould (mold). Some cleaners will case the mould (mold) to give off gas micro toxins into the air witch may be harmful to human health. If you clean the mould (mold) with out properly protecting the home. You may cross contaminate other areas within the home creating a more serious problem then when you started.

•Will the mould (mold) come back after it is cleaned?

The mould (mold) will return if the issue that started the mould (mold) in the first place is not repaired. At Cumberland specialty cleaning systems we do not only clean the mould (mold) we also make recommendation so that the mould (mold) will not return. If these recommendation are carried out we guaranty the

mould (mold) will be gone for good.

Non-Friable products which may contain Asbestos pose little danger of releasing airborne fibers unless they are cut, broken, sawn, ground, sanded or are in  deteriorating condition.

•Why should I have it removed?

As time goes on the Asbestos can become friable such as material in air handling systems where air movement can break down or erode the material. It can  become damaged by water , vibration, accident, and vandalism.

•Is Asbestos dangerous when it becomes wet?

Water can dislodge, delaminate and disturb friable asbestos-containing materials that are otherwise in good condition. Water can carry fibers as a slurry to other area where evaporation leaves a collection of fibers that can be released into the air.
